Anti-Empowering

In 2017, Allure magazine dumped the term “anti-aging,” but the industry has invented many phrases that mean the same thing: “Aging is bad.”

I thought I’d write something about that, but then I discovered Jessica DeFino, a reporter/critic who covers this beat, and her powerful piece from 2023, “There’s no ethical way to sell products that target signs of aging.”

She exposes the industry’s age rhetoric for what it is: A capitalist machine that wants women to believe we’re “empowered” by chasing the old youth-is-beauty ideals.

Want to be actually empowered? Own your age.

And read DeFino’s excellent article.
