How Does It Look?

Last weekend, I witnessed one of those moments when someone was having a birthday, and someone said, You don’t look your age.

The response? The usual thank you and a great big smile.

We’re so used to this one—and to believing it’s a compliment—we ignore what it really means: I equate your years with something unappealing.

In truth, everyone looks their age. We’ve simply been conditioned to believe that each number has a certain appearance—when clearly, that’s not true.

Whenever we’re surprised, it’s a good time to remember …

That’s one of those assumptions that’s wrong.
