Who Do You Mean?

One problem with the word “older” is that it’s unclear who we’re referring to. In a book I’m reading, the authors suggest that, when it comes to designing computing interfaces for an aging population, “older” means 50+.

But then they present examples that suggest these people have never used a computer at work.

Now, we certainly can’t ascribe an age range to that group, but if we could, 50+ wouldn’t be it.

These types of inaccurate references tend to leave people with inaccurate beliefs about the various adults around them.

And that’s part of the problem we’re trying to solve.
