Why Quit?

The headline read, “David Lynch says he will ‘never retire,’ despite emphysema diagnosis.”

But filmmaker David Lynch didn’t say “despite.” That 7-letter editorialization came from a journalist who apparently thinks that quitting work is the natural thing to do.

But think about it: Why would Lynch retire? He has an exciting, creative occupation and the artistic freedom to follow his own particular style. Is there something about the word “retire” that sounds more attractive than that? To any of us?

It’s time to stop talking about retirement as if it’s everybody’s sensible goal. It isn’t.

Despite what some journalists say.
