A Regular Thing

Two older women in a living room, talking

Those stereotype-driven generation names are bad enough, but it’s truly awful when they get turned into cutesy new terms—like “boommates,” which is nothing but roommates with an ageist twist.

The articles I read talked about people sharing a household, finding it economical to do so, and enjoying it best when they get along with their housemates. Normal people doing completely normal stuff.

But a few journalists are trying to make older people sound “other.” Again.

Here’s hoping this pretend word goes away quickly.

“My mom has a new roommate.” Simple and sensible.

Everyone deserves the dignity of regular words.
