Biscotti, Anyone?
The NYT recently published an opinion piece called “Grandma Foods” that’s upsetting pro-aging advocates. It’s a paean to cartoonish synonyms for older person along with a riff on foods the author associates with “inevitable decline.”
Her premise is, lately, she can’t enjoy certain things—like biscotti—without considering herself “gravitating helplessly” to them. (Get it? Helpless … aging?) She also notes these foods are a reminder that she must die.
She tries to claim “None of this is a slight against old people”—but it’s actually a slight against everyone.
Spreading ageist fears about eating is poisonous to us all.
