Biscotti, Anyone?

The NYT recently published an opinion piece called “Grandma Foods” that’s upsetting pro-aging advocates. It’s a paean to cartoonish synonyms for older person along with a riff on foods the author associates with “inevitable decline.”

Her premise is, lately, she can’t enjoy certain things—like biscotti—without considering herself “gravitating helplessly” to them. (Get it? Helplessaging?) She also notes these foods are a reminder that she must die.

She tries to claim “None of this is a slight against old people”—but it’s actually a slight against everyone.

Spreading ageist fears about eating is poisonous to us all.
