Check the Runway

Some managers like to believe that, by selecting younger hires, they’ll get employees with a “longer runway.” But that runway often leads to someone else’s airfield.

As the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports, in the year ending January 2024, people aged 25-34 stayed with one employer for a median of 2.7 years. Those aged 45-54 stayed for 7.0.

And it goes up by age, with that catchall “65+” showing strong at 9.8 years.

If you really want to know how an employee’s flight pattern benefits you, take a look. Among the people you hired 5 years ago, who actually stayed?
