Grand Example

Two children kissing a woman—possibly their grandmother—on the cheeks

People often use “grandma” or “grandmother” as a shortcut to suggest “out of touch,” “frail” or “hasn’t got a clue.” So I was pleasantly surprised to hear psychology professor Dacher Keltner on the 10% Happier podcast.

He gave this definition of what it means to experience “moral beauty”: “You just pause for a moment and think of the people who have changed your life, through their kindness or courage or resilience.”

Then he suggested this example: “Your grandmother, who worked so hard for the family and took care of so many people.”

Such a thoughtful use of a meaningful word.
