In the UK, there’s an “editor’s code,” which “sets the framework for the highest professional standards” for the press. Not every outlet subscribes, but it’s an interesting approach to responsible reporting. 

At Kings College London, there’s a program called the Sciences of Ageing and the Culture of Youth (SAACY). They’re addressing the question, “How do we change the way aging is represented in advertising, the media, and the creative industries?”

One of their suggestions: Lobby for changes to the editor’s code.

It seems like a promising approach. Imagine reporters preemptively asking Ashton Applewhite’s signature question …
