Leaving Soon?
In a presentation about recognizing and responding to ageism, one audience member was convinced it’s not ageist for managers to specifically ask older employees when they’re planning to retire. It’s important for succession planning, she said.
But consider this: Employees generally don’t stay with one organization for long these days—and the younger the employee, the shorter the tenure, on average.
For true succession planning, managers would need to regularly ask all employees when they’re planning to leave.
Also, here’s an interesting analogy: You certainly don’t ask younger employees whether they’re taking time out to have a baby anytime soon.
