Lessons from Losing

A guy I know told a story about being in a hot-rod race just after high school. He’d been given no chance to practice in the car he borrowed, so things went all wrong, and he lost. To a grandmother.

Cue the laughter.

Now, I recognize that this was embarrassing to an 18-year-old kid. But I couldn’t help wishing he’d wrapped up the story with some later-life wisdom—like recognizing that the older driver prevailed through knowledge and experience.

And expressing a fervent hope that when he’s a grandparent, he gets to kick some ass in a hot rod, too.
