Raising Eyebrows

A woman opening her eyes wide and holding her hands in front of her mouth, in a look of surprise

My friend is in a relationship with a man who’s 14 years younger than her. When people learn that, they often say Good for you! and raise their eyebrows. She doesn’t like it, and I understand why.

I mean, do people really think, Ooh! I’m imaginging your partner’s body! when they hear about who we’re dating? And if they’re thinking Good for you, are they thinking Too bad for him?

To be generous, I think folks are considering how the tables are turned, and down with the patriarchy—and that’s good stuff.

But let’s stop suggesting “younger is better” altogether.
