Not Inevitable

It’s not hard to see why someone would write an article titled “One Couple in Their 90s Confronts a Stark Reality: Aging at Different Speeds.” With longevity on the rise, it seems timely to talk about older people growing older.

But “aging at different speeds”? No.

It turns out, the article’s focus is how couples navigate staying together—or not—when one partner has dementia.

That’s important. But equating dementia with “aging faster” suggests it’s inevitable; that we’ll all develop it eventually. Studies find this misconception is common—but still untrue.

Fact: Dementia is not a normal part of aging.
