Who’s “This”?

Ever heard someone mention “this generation” without clarification—as if it automatically defines a specific age group? It’s mysterious. Which of the unscientific, named “generations” is “this” one?

People aren’t generally saying it to refer to their own peers, as we might say “this company” or “this family.” It’s often used to suggest a lack of skill or knowledge in others. “This generation doesn’t know such-and-such.”

Honestly, I think it’s supposed to mean “the people just beginning their careers,” as if humans that age are particularly significant, and everyone else isn’t.

Can’t wait till we dump the whole “generations” thing.
