Imagine if life expectancy started heading downward—if today’s 50-year-olds were expected to live to 80, but today’s 5-year-olds were only expected to make it to 70.
Everyone would see it as a problem. The media would go wild with a steady stream of negativity. The health press, the financial press, the business press, the politicians—they’d talk about the tragedy and the cost and how these changes will wreak havoc across our systems.
So if the news is, instead, that life expectancy is going upward—and it has been for a while—they should all be cheering … right?
