Same Sh%t, Different Day

A vintage-looking calendar page on a small wooden easel

Listening to a podcast, I heard a story in which someone mentioned “an older couple.” When asked, How old? the answer came back, Seventies, if I’m being kind.

Same podcast, different day, one of the hosts mentioned “an older gentleman.” When asked, once again, How old? the response was, I don’t want to be unkind, but I think he was in his seventies.

“Kind?” “Unkind?”

It’s interesting that neither host paused, either time, to say, Wait—are we suggesting growing older is a bad thing?

It’s almost as if equating age with insult was completely normal in our culture.

Hmm.
