Life, Actually

It’s always baffling when someone says they “still” feel “full of life.” Because if you’re not full of life, what else have you got in there?

It’s literally a morbid thought.

That full-of-life phrasing bewildered me years ago, when I read about a 99-year-old who said it while taking her first flying lesson.

And it took me by surprise this week, when I saw Gayle King, not-quite-70, say it to her friends in an interview on YouTube.

Reminds me of a quote from Robert Butler:

We ignore the fact that human beings are alive
until they are actually dead.
