Second Opinion

The word YES is crossed out on a blackboard as a hand writes NO

Yesterday I shared some thoughts on “advanced age” and its use in medical charting. Today I talked with a knowledgeable nurse who’s deeply involved in pro-aging work.

She pointed out that, in medicine, “advanced” is associated with disease that’s getting worse—which doesn’t make it a compelling companion to “age.”

In addition, age is never the specific reason for any particular health condition. If it were, we’d all have the same conditions at the same age.

Instead of citing “advanced age” as a justification or reason for anything, she recommends, cite the specific condition.

Take the age out of it.
