So Much Noise

“If it’s too loud, you’re too old.” That’s a quote made famous by Ted Nugent when he was in his 20s. It’s the kind of us-versus-them witticism that makes those in the in-group feel proud.

A colleague of mine who loves hard rock remembers those days. She’s the one who told me about the quip and how she used to laugh along.

But now she recognizes it was ageist as well as dangerous—especially to her, as a blind woman who relies on her hearing more than most.

It’d be interesting to know what grown-up musicians think of it now.
