What’s in a Name

A chalkboard with several names written on it

A researcher looked into the names social scientists use in studies, to determine whether different names are associated with different ages. They are, and the report ranks 228 names from “youngest” to “oldest.”

The goal is to help other researchers understand the “nonrandom impressions” a name might elicit—for example, how Dolores scenarios might be perceived differently from Brynlee situations. (BTW, Margaret’s toward the bottom of the list.)

We’ve seen similar research before, especially with ethnic-sounding names on resumés—and I can’t help thinking, age probably makes a difference there, too.

Unless the hiring company’s age-agnostic. What are the chances?
