Standing Strong

A closeup of someone's feet in white sneakers, standing on the ground

In a pharmacy, I watched as a woman walked to the counter, using a rollator, and asked the staff if they could call her driver.

One of them mentioned her name (Irene) and age (96) and suggested she sit down. I’m fine, Irene responded, politely.

But he kept offering chairs, and Irene kept declining. Then he asked about the rollator, Can you sit on that?

Irene repeated I’m fine until her driver appeared and they left.

I hope she laughed with her friends later.

Because Irene didn’t get to be 96 by listening to people tell her to sit down.
