Tech Expectations

A Macbook partially open and glowing with bright colors

A tech professional I know recently confessed that she’d been momentarily surprised when talking to a 95-year-old client who was clearly embracing technology.

But instead of saying, Wow! That’s amazing!—and furthering the stereotype that old people generally can’t handle computers and smart phones and things that change—my techie friend caught herself, and stayed cool.

It was deeply refreshing to hear. Because gushing My, aren’t you special! every time an older person does something perfectly normal is like patting a kid on the head. It says My expectations of you were frankly quite low.

And everyone deserves great expectations.
