The Age of Romance

A billboard with large letters that say "Love Is Why."

When I first moved to Portland, in my 50s, I worked and occasionally chatted with Kristen, in her early 30s. One time the conversation turned toward our adventures (hers successful and mine comic) at Match.com.

Kristen mentioned her father-in-law, at 65, was also active in online dating—then giggled and said, I don’t know why!

For her, it was apparently a WTF moment to think that someone who easily had decades ahead of him to enjoy, might actually be seeking companionship, romance—and OMG sex.

But the fact that she even questioned it? That was a WTF moment for me.
