Simply a Spectacle

A pair of glasses

K.T. is in Toastmasters, where she speaks well, laughs infectiously, and tells fun and compelling stories.

Years ago, she gave a talk with her reading glasses perched atop her head. When it came time for feedback, an evaluator said she might want to rethink that look.

Not because it seemed like she was absent-minded and hadn’t paid attention to details. And not because the glasses looked like they might be a prop—like Chekhov’s gun—that the audience would expect her to use.

But because “somebody might think she’s older.”

I am older, she thought, unfazed.

And that was that.
