The Birthday Line

A collection of bright green, yellow, pink, blue, and orange balloons

There’s an icebreaker activity where participants line up across a room, arranging themselves by birthday—from the beginning of January to the end of December.

In the description I read, the author noted year isn’t part of the exercise, and added “thankfully!” as a reminder (like we needed one) that ageism is alive and well; that age-embarrassment is the widely acknowledged norm.

It sounds like a fun activity, but if I ever host it myself, I plan to make a suggestion: Feel free to share your birth year as you’re chatting.

And when you do, say it with pride.
