The R Word

A capital letter R, in parentheses

“David Letterman at 77 says retirement is both ‘a myth’ and ‘nonsense.’” That headline proved irresistible, so I clicked and found the source: a video interview with GQ magazine.

In it, Letterman mentions that, after his talk show ended, he found the change of rhythm “largely unsatisfying.” His recipe for handling that? “You gotta find something that’s important to you.”

“Now I have the energy and the broader focus to recognize humanity has other fulfilling pursuits,” he says.

To some people, that might sound exactly like what “retirement” means.

But some of us like to push against the R word.
