Things in Common

An audience at a music concert, many with their hands in the air

A podcaster interviewed a music legend in her 70s and mentioned the musician was an icon to both her 15-year-old kid and her 80-year-old dad. Then she said, That’s a weird thing. And again, That’s weird.

But is it?

Is it actually mysterious or strange that a variety of people are impressed by someone’s talent—regardless of age?

When we call something “weird,” we send a signal that it’s not what normal people do. And by repeating that stereotype, we reinforce it.

In a world without ageism, we’d normalize the truth: We have a lot in common, regardless of age.
