Welcome to the Day

A woman with grey hair reclines among pillows while holding a book and joyously kicks one leg in the air while smiling.

Back in my day, people say, making a joke about how long ago they were young, or in school, or whatever.

Back in my day, the TV was a huge piece of furniture.

Back in my day, the phone was stuck to the wall.

Sometimes it’s said in a weak-sounding warble, as if the speaker is far too feeble to have a voice.

But why?

It’s a strange way to put things—as if the past belonged to us, but the present … doesn’t?

C’mon, let’s not un-seize the day! We’re here—right now.

Today is our day, too.
