What to Change

A woman with short auburn hair and round glasses, using her phone in selfie mode as a mirror to apply lipstick.

Like many people my age (63), I’ve looked in the mirror and unhappily thought, I look old.

It’s an interesting complaint/conundrum for a pro-aging advocate—because what’s wrong with looking any particular age?

But the interesting part, to me, is understanding what I’m actually complaining about. What do I want to change?

And then it hits me: I’m quite pale.

Out comes the “natural rose” this and the “soft taupe” that, and a light touch of “sandbar” whatever.

I don’t look any younger, and I don’t need to.

I just wanted more color. Why did I call that “looking old”?
