It was exciting to learn that 46-year-old swimmer Gabby Rose qualified for and competed in the semi-finals at the Olympic Trials.

It was less exciting to hear an announcer call her “46 years young.” That worn-out joke suggests “old” should be replaced with a euphemism, because it’s such a terrible thing to say.

But euphemisms actually tell people This is a thing we should shun and fear—the thing we don’t want to be.

Whereas, being X-years-old just means you were born X years ago, and you’re still alive. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

It’s a win.
