Zoning for Growth

The Maine Council on Aging developed a program that trains leaders to eradicate ageism. Other states are adopting it, too. I had a chance to attend, and one of the many things that stuck with me was a section on “discomfort and the learning zone.”

When new information isn’t challenging enough, we stay in our comfort zones and change doesn’t happen. When it’s way too challenging, we’re pushed into the panic zone, where stress blocks learning.

How can we best help people absorb something new—like information about ageism?

Aim for the learning zone. Let excitement and engagement spark growth.
