The Silver Surfer

A person surfing a swelling wave

The image of the “silver-haired surfer” is both attractive and complicated. It’s wonderful to show that—stereotypes be damned— there are people at every age who are healthy, active, and involved in exciting things.

But those amazing stories about older athletes fall short when they suggest that all it takes is eating well and staying active.

It also takes genes and luck—and privilege. Access to things like healthcare, nature/trails/workout facilities, good groceries, transportation, clean air, a system of support.

Not everybody has these.

What’s better than being an amazing individual at 90?

Creating an environment where everyone can thrive.
