All Is Not Loss

II remember thinking When I grow up, I want to serve Cool Whip for dinner.

Now I serve quiche and lentils and stuff like that—and I know that shedding my sweet-and-creamy dream is not a “loss.” It’s growth.

A woman I met bemoaned that she used to throw enormous parties, but now she likes to host dinner for six—and she framed this as a defeat. You can’t deny there’s loss with age, she said.

But I thought, If you like it … why call it “loss”?

Sometimes we need to reframe our narrative. Change can be delicious.
