At the Intersection
In some of my talks, I show two photos: A bunch of (white) teenagers hanging out by a car on their way to Woodstock; and a group of (Black) teenagers marching on Washington.
Then I ask whether these kids—all of whom would have been born between 1946 and 1964—grew up in similar circumstances, with “general prosperity” and “new-found wealth” as the underpinning of their formative years.
Or is it possible that the unscientific, stereotyped way that some people talk about different age cohorts actually ignores a huge part of the population?
Ageism intersects with other forms of discrimination.
