Let’s Educate

My local librarians honored my request for a display about Ageism Awareness Day (Oct. 9)—yay!

But also, several of the books they chose were actually quite ageist—oops!

There were titles that included words like antiaging and ageless—terms that suggest there’s something wrong with aging and age itself.

And there were others that focused on being young, staying young and not getting old, as if young=good and old=not.

It’s tricky to explain why the premise of these books is inherently ageist, but the distinction is important. (And I think they understood …?)

Education is key to eliminating ageism.
