How to Be Normal

There’s a lot of talk about older employees working “because they need the income.” But here’s something that never seems to get mentioned: That’s the reason almost everybody works. It’s completely normal.

When I see phrases like “holding onto their jobs” and “not leaving the workplace,” I want to ask the writers/researchers/pundits, Aren’t you doing that, too?

It’s time to stop suggesting older adults don’t actually belong at work—that we need an excuse to use our skills and experience in exchange for resources.

It’s just what people do.
