Better Definition

A man with gray hair an a beard, with his glasses perched on his lower lip

In 2023, the Coty company (they make cosmetics, etc.) started a petition to ask the Oxford dictionary to change its definition of “beauty.” Why? They want the sexism and ageism removed.

The usage examples from Oxford include, “I was struck by her beauty” and “she was considered a great beauty in her youth.”

Yep—it’s all about being female and young.

Btw, a quick look at other sources shows that many publishers have updated their examples. Webster even includes this quote: “Our culture's beauty standards and stereotypes are not going to disappear overnight, but we have made some progress.”
