More Dictionary Rubbish

A book with mangled, torn and dirty pages

If you’ve ever looked up the word “burden,” you’ve probably been exposed to some seriously ugly age bias.

For example, you may have run across “forced to bear the burden of caring for her aging parents” (Webster); or, similarly, “She had to bear/shoulder the burden of caring for her aging parents” (Britannica).

Then again, perhaps you got a break from the idea that it’s specifically a feminine responsibility to care—and maybe you found, “The main burden of caring for old people falls on the state” (Oxford).

What ageist definitions have you discovered? Please share; I’ll be following up.
