Don’t Fall for Anything

A sheet of ice crystals

September is Falls Prevention month.

Where I live (in Portland, Oregon) that’s particularly important—because we occasionally have ice storms that glaze the trees and turn the sidewalks deadly.

It happened last January, and once the sun-exposed roads (but nothing else) were passable, I watched as my neighbor returned from a grocery run, got out of his car, sat down, and butt-scooched across the ice to his front door.

I cheered! This was a man who’d decided not to fall, come hell or frozen water!

People often associate “preventing falls” with older adults, but remember: It’s important for everyone.
