Clearing the Air

Smoke hanging in the air

Studies show links between internalized ageism and negative health outcomes—and even earlier death—which makes me think of second-hand smoke.

Anytime we see an ageist birthday card or hear an ageist joke, the health effect is like someone’s puffing away nearby, and we’re breathing it in.

Every time we watch a TV show with a ridiculous older character, or come across an anti-aging ad, it’s like we’ve stumbled into the smoking lounge. Cough.

PSAs made a huge difference in our understanding—and tolerance—of second-hand smoke, in the '80s.

Let’s spread the word about this public health issue, too.
