Go Ahead, Date Me

Someone's hand placing the tonearm onto a record

Kayaking on July 4th, I met a woman about my age. Somewhere in our brief conversation, she used the phrase, Now I’m dating myself.

I don’t remember why she said it, but we hear this all the time. People say it when they recognize an Eagles tune, or mention they voted for Carter, or say something about a record player ...

My handy response is, There’s nothing wrong with dating ourselves—let’s be proud of our age.

That’s what I said to my friend on the river, and she caught the positive vibe.

You’re right, she said. We’ve earned it!
