Maybe It’s Work

A woman looks at her laptop screen with a worried look, holding her face in her hands

As part of a school project, I looked at stock photos and the keywords used to describe them—and it was striking to see what a difference the subject’s age would make.

I particularly looked at pictures of people using computers, with distressed looks on their faces.

For youngers, the pained appearance was always the result of hard work, stress, or a computer acting up.

But for olders, that same expression was labeled as “struggling” and “confused.”

You can’t judge a book by its cover. You can’t judge a computer user by their age.

But we can sure stop trying.
