Hit or Miss?

When I comment on the words people use about aging, my goal is to say, “When we say this, here’s what it really means.” But sometimes I miss the mark, and it sounds like I’m saying, “Don’t use that word!”

Today, I saw this headline: “How to Be Your Best Despite the Passing Years,” and I left this comment: “The word ‘despite’ in this title brings in an unnecessary judgement on aging. Why not simply ‘during’?”

Not surprisingly, I haven’t heard back—and I suspect they won’t make the edit.

But I’m wondering, did I hit the mark? Or miss?
