Just a Beginning

A sign stenciled on a wooden floor. It says, "Play. Participate in the lives of America's Youth" and there's a swoosh logo beneath it.

My workouts these days are at a community center, where I recently noticed a stencil on the floor of the basketball gym. It says: PLAY. PARTICIPATE IN THE LIVES OF AMERICA’S YOUTH.

Of course I questioned the focus on youth … at first.

But I think it’s a charitable reminder that not everyone has the privilege and opportunity to be on a sports team—and if more adults would sign up as coaches and the like, more kids would get to play.

Still, I can’t help wishing for another sign nearby:
AND KEEP PLAYING, GROWN-UPS. YOUTH IS JUST THE BEGINNING.
