Little Words

The words "yes you can" spelled out in yellow tiles, in a 3-by-3 grid

Sometimes the smallest words are injected into a phrase in a way that suggests, when older adults are perfectly capable, active, or interesting, that needs to be called out as an exception.

Words like “but” and “although,” “still” and “yet.” “He’s older, but he’s really tech savvy.” “Although she’s 68, she’s still working.” “They all have white hair, and yet they’re so stylish.”

The suggestion is that these things and age don’t go together. That we shouldn’t expect such assets and abilities later in life. But, c’mon, there’s no reason not to.

It’s time to eliminate these limiting little words.
