Seniority in the Sky

A Southwest Airlines plane against a blue sky with wispy white clouds

One of the things that makes me very happy is flying Southwest and finding many of the flight attendants are older adults. Recently I chatted with a couple of them—including Toni, who was in her 40s when she was hired, 20 years ago.

She told me the oldest new-hire in her class was 70. She also told me they received extra seniority points for life experience.

“Wow,” I said. “Maybe this is my backup plan. What are the requirements?” Toni says they’re straightforward and age-neutral. “As long as you can do the job,” she says.

Doesn’t that sound sensible?
