Not Sayin’ It

A woman clasping her hand over her mouth while reading a piece of paper

Last week I spoke at #SHRMinclusion, and in my presentation, I mentioned that generational labels allow ageism—against people of all ages—to thrive in plain sight.

From the stage, I did say a few of those ageist generation names out loud. And I almost made a joke about wanting to wash my mouth out with soap.

The next day, I listened to another presenter who also mentioned that these names are harmful stereotypes. But she wisely didn’t say the words themselves, because she doesn’t like to “give them any airtime.”

Good call, Shari Collins. Let’s stop using those words.
