Recognizing It

Recently, I caught up with a former colleague—first on LinkedIn, then by phone (OMG how we laughed!). He mentioned my recent write-ups and noted he’s lucky: He’s not the recipient of ageism at work.

It’s great to hear—but I was also wondering, Do we always know? Because ageism isn’t just barefaced comments about whether you’re too old to understand computers, or jokes about your “archaic” lingo.

Sometimes it’s assumptions and opportunities that aren’t even mentioned to you.

I hope that’s not happening to my friend, but it’s also important to remember …

Ageism might be subtle or obvious.
