Showing Off

A striped crosswalk across a broad street, with a brick building and trees on the other side

On a street near me, striped crosswalks show pedestrians where to cross safely and show drivers where to stop. Legally, I know I could step out and the cars should yield; but judiciously, I know to wait for a break in traffic.

Sometimes a driver stops preemptively, and I take the opportunity to wave, then jog across.

Why jog?

Not because I think I need to hurry, but because I want to show that I’m athletic enough to run.

And why show off for strangers?

Because it helps expose more people to this truth: “Gray-haired lady” doesn’t mean “frail.”
