Take a Hike

A woman walking on a snowy trail, with hiking poles

Often I ask audiences to think of a time they’ve said, “I’m too old to. …” Jan had caught herself saying, I’m too old to go for a hike.

The next step is to ask, What do you really mean? and Jan—a serious walker—realized she meant, I don’t currently trust my footing and balance on an uneven trail.

Completely different! Suddenly, she realized she could talk to a physical therapist, look into exercises, try hiking poles. She had ideas.

Blaming it on age makes it something we can’t change.

Focusing on the real issue points to real solutions.
